PIEKENIERSKLOOF

In 1923 Johan Abraham Van Zyl settled in the undeveloped, rugged mountain ridge of the Piekenierskloof. He was one of 5 sons from a family who lived on a farm which today forms part of the town of Citrusdal. When the time came for the brothers to branch out on their own, lots were drawn to determine which brother will have the daunting task of braving the untamed Piekenierskloof mountain. The lot fell on an unmarried brother, prompting Johan Abraham’s wife, Wilhelmina, to declare that she and Johan should rather move up to the mountain because the appointed brother will have a hard time developing the farm without the support of a wife! In due course vines were planted on other farms in the area, creating the need for a winery.

In 1957 Citrusdal winery was established. In 1959 Johan Abraham’s son Carel van Zyl moved down the road to Bergendal where the first Chenin Blanc and Muscat vineyards he planted in 1962 can still be visited today. After several developments in the recent past, amongst them the name change to ‘Piekenierskloof Wine Company’, Carel’s two sons, Oubaas and Potgieter van Zyl as well as their sister Mientjie Mouton, now own the winery and have embarked on a mission to develop the immense potential of the area and its vines.

PIEKENIERSKLOOF CHENIN BLANC

Grapes are sourced from vineyards predominantly in the Piekenierskloof region.
These are bush vineyards and grow on koffieklip and sandy loam soils.
Vineyards are planted in 1987.
Upfront pear drops, pawpaw with juicy tropical summer melon on the palate.
Nice mouth filling with hints of mango on a great, fresh, and crisp finish.

GRENACHE BLANC

Grapes are sourced from vineyards predominantly in the Piekenierskloof region.
These are bush vineyards and grow on koffieklip and sandy loam soils.
Vineyards are planted in 1987.
A wine with fresh citrus aromas with lots of green apple and a herbaceous finish.
The wine has a fresh but full and smooth mouth feel with a crisp finish.

GRENACHE ROSÉ

Grapes are sourced from the Piekenierskloof region.
Vineyards are planted in 1968.
These vineyards are all bush vines and grow on sandy, loam soils.
The vineyards are meticulously farmed and managed to yield below 4 tons
per hectare.
This unique Rosé was carefully crafted with abundance of succulent strawberry,
luscious cherry and raspberry flavours with subtle rose petal undertones that
forms a surprisingly delicious experience.

CINSAULT

Grapes are sourced from vineyards in the Piekenierskloof region from vineyards
that were planted in 1976.
These vineyards are all unirrigated bush vines and grow on sandy, loam soils.
The vineyards are meticulously farmed and managed to yield below 5 tons
per hectare.
An elegant and velvety wine with good colour and concentration for Cinsault.
Red berries and cherries, savoury black olives and black spice.
Well balanced with lively fine tannins and an elegant complexity on a long finish.

Lots of juicy red berry, strawberry, earthy and elegant notes of pepper on the palate with
hints of cloves,cardamom pod and smokiness.
Well balanced with lively fine tannins and an elegant complexity on a long finish.

CABERNET SAUVIGNON

Grapes are sourced from vineyards in the Piekenierskloof region.
These vineyards are all non-irrigated bush vines and grow on sandy, loam soils.
The vineyards are meticulously farmed and managed to yield below 5 tons per
hectare.
This Cabernet Sauvignon is a very good example of typical South African Cabernet
with an intense dark red colour with good vibrancies.
The nose reminds of cassis, dark chocolate, and tobacco notes.
Firm tannins, a definite richness in texture, full bodied and great length.

HEIRLOOM WHITE

Grapes are sourced from vineyards in the Piekenierskloof region.
Vineyards were planted in 1962 (Chenin Blanc), 1994 (Grenache Blanc) and 1998
(Chardonnay).
These vineyards are all bush vines and grow on sandy, loam soils.
The vineyards are meticulously farmed and managed to yield below 5 tons per
hectare.
Complex with layers of tropical fruit, stone fruit, peach, and white pears on the
palate with notes of citrus.
Well balanced acidity, elegant oak with a long lingering finish.

HEIRLOOM RED

Grapes are sourced from vineyards in the Piekenierskloof region.
These vineyards are all bush vines and grow on sandy, loam soils.
The vineyards are meticulously farmed and managed to yield below 5 tons
per hectare and hand harvested at a balling of 26.
Showing beautiful sour cherries, ripe currants, aniseed with notes of white pepper,
vanilla pod, forest floor and tea leaf.
Complex, medium bodied and layered blend with smooth well integrated
tannin structure.
Well-rounded with a long, elegant finish on aftertaste.

CAREL VAN ZYL GRENACHE

BERGENDAL CHENIN BLANC

Grapes are sourced from vineyards in the Piekenierskloof region.
Vineyards were planted in 1962.
These vineyards are all bush vines and grow on sandy, loam soils.
The vineyards are meticulously farmed and managed to yield below 3-4 tons
per hectare.
Beautiful white blossoms, tropical fruit with hints of vanilla on the palate.
Rich, full and creamy with a well-balanced mid palate and elegant apricot that
lingers on the finish.

JOHAN VAN ZYL PINOTAGE

Grapes are sourced from vineyards in the Piekenierskloof region from vineyards that
were planted in 1976.
These vineyards are all non-irrigated bush vines and grow on sandy, loam soils.
The vineyards are meticulously farmed and managed to yield below 5 tons per hectare.
This wine has a deep, dark purple colour.
The nose reminds of red fruit, raspberry, and cherries with hints of toast and vanilla
from the French oakbarrels.
The pallet is full bodied with lots of tannin that will make this wine last for at least
20 years.

STRAW WINE 375ml

The grapes for the Piekenierskloof Straw Wine come from a Muscat de Frontignan
vineyard that was planted in 1962.
These vines are all bush vine trained and grow on clay -loam soils.
The vineyards are meticulously farmed and managed to yield below 2 tons
per hectare.
The grapes were hand harvested into small lug boxes.
The nose is concentrated with notes of peach and dried apricot, a touch of spice
and honey suckle.
On the palate it is rich and full, with a well-balanced acidity and creamy texture
that developed during barrel maturation.
